Like many of us, garden owners have had lots of time on their hands this year and the outcome is that gardens of the West Cork Garden Trail are to an exceptional standard and have never looked better! In line with the recent relaxations around movement, most of the 27 gardens of the West Cork Garden Trail are now open and operating in accordance with guidelines on social distancing and hand hygiene.
Details of opening hours for each garden are available on this website. We advise calling a garden before travelling. Some can be visited without a prior appointment but many request contact beforehand and details of the number of visitors and date and time of arrival. Most gardens will not be able to offer refreshments, but many will welcome visitors having picnics in designated locations. Some have toilet facilities available on request. We request that visitors wear face-masks when interacting with garden owners.
There will be no printed brochures available this year, but you can see specific opening details for each individual garden on this site. West Cork is truly the garden paradise of Ireland, bathed as it is in the balm of the Gulf Stream which encourages the luxuriant sub-tropical growth of a kind more usually associated with much lower latitudes. Our gardens are wonderful and diverse, healing and tranquil, exciting and unmissable.
Many of us gardeners on the Trail are making great efforts to improve the sustainability of our gardens. Whether it is with more naturalistic, wildlife friendly planting, or making efforts to reduce use of plastic or growing more edible crops, we all have our part to play, and we as gardeners will be happy to share our experiences.

When I close my eyes and think of Ireland, my mind immediately lands on a particular sunny day in County Cork. My husband and I leisurely walked along the cliffs of Ballycotton feeling as if we were the only two people on earth.
I remember the peace l felt looking over the Celtic Sea, with the waves rolling in at their own steady pace. I remember the fresh air, salty and sweet from the sea water and fresh grass, stinging my lungs. I remember the sun, however briefly it showed itself, warming my face and shining in my hair. I remember the craggy path, teetering on the cliffs, and the massive thorn bushes that made us feel safe by barring our way to the edge.
All of these things I remember with a reminiscent sigh, a testament that the coast of Ballycotton inspires even the busiest people to take a deep breath. Of course, our time in Ballycotton is only one of many pleasant memories we have in County Cork. From the beautiful town of Cobh to the bustling city of Cork, my husband and I continue to look on the area with profound fondness.

We have been Matchmaking in Cork since so in that time, and having organised thousands of dates for Corkonians, we have developed a keen sense of what hurdles they impose on themselves that hamper the search for their perfect match. With clients in all 32 Counties, we have seen patterns develop that are common to most inhabitants of those Counties.
For instance, in Kerry, everyone thinks they are famous so meeting to conduct profile interviews in any public place is like a covert operation. The rebel County is another kettle of fish altogether with each and every inhabitant having a County pride that surpasses all others. One of our policies for instance is that if you are to be accepted as a member you must be willing to date people outside your own County.
Most of the population have no problem with this and know that the emphasis should be on finding the right match and not just the right geography. Not so, in Cork. In a perfect world nobody would need to make sacrifices to find love and we would all fall for our neighbour. But in reality, if dating in Cork has not worked for you, then would it be so bad to look outside the boundary?
